DameWare Mini Remote Control (MRC) vs. Microsoft RDP

DameWare Mini Remote Control (MRC) provides the experience of “standing over someone’s shoulder" during troubleshooting, administration or technical support sessions. More than a remote console, it allows a technician and an end user to share the same screen (or screens - works with multiple monitors), chat, and capture screenshots together.

Multiple Remote Control Protocols and Operating Systems

DameWare Mini Remote Control (MRC) can connect and control remote computers using RDP, VNC and its own DameWare protocol. These computers can be Windows desktops, Windows laptops, Windows servers, Macintosh computers (running Apple’s built-in VNC server), or Linux computers.

Multiple Connections and Monitors on All Windows Operating Systems

RDP does not support multiple monitors on Windows XP or Windows 2000. Nor does it support more than one active connection on Windows 2000 or Windows 2003. DameWare MRC operates without these limitations, providing a consistent administration experience on all Windows operating systems.

Chat, File Transfer and Screenshot Utilities

DameWare MRC includes utilities that make remote support and remote administration easy. The chat utility allows a remote user and local administrator to communicate during troubleshooting. The file transfer utility provides a “side-by-side” transfer window for local and remote files. The screenshot utility captures the current view into popular image formats. None of these utilities are included in RDP.

IPv6 and NAT Support

DameWare MRC supports IPv6, the network of the future. It also supports complex NAT deployments to support the networks of today. (RDP also supports IPv6, but does not handle NAT.)

Fine-Grained Access Controls

Administrators and power users may control exactly how much remote access is granted to various individuals through access controls oriented toward remote support and remote administration.
